Bless them souls that have Hip Hop in them. Although it is undeniably a genre that did not originate from Asia but we Malaysian Hip Hop heads have embraced it to good effect. Take note the influences of Hip Hop in your daily lives.
The biggest hit songs you listen too are mostly influenced by Hip Hop if not Hip Hop it self. For the past couple of months I have noticed that the MET10 charts on Hitz.fm is filled with Hip Hop. Yes of course there is rock but otherwise a good half is Hip Hop. This week there are 3 Hip Hop tracks in the top 5 and one song has some Raps in it.
Is our commercial Hip Hop scene slowly rising? Perhaps so… is the underground scene dead? I think far from it. Thanks to the many people behind the scenes of Hip Hop in this country we get to catch big Hip Hop stars for the past year right until now.
Spurring the scene a little with an album release is Malique with his debut solo album titled OK. He sold 1000 copies in the first week. It is not that great but it has been awhile someone in the scene has done that.
I also notice the rise of young Hip Hop crews all over the country. Very much growing their fan base and skills online at websites such as Reverbnation, Amp, Nokia IAC and many other music network websites on the net. States that many regard as the midgets of the scene are exceptionally good and shows a lot of promise.
Sarawak, Kelantan and Kedah to name a few have really good underground acts. Don’t believe me? Google it and you will find distinct styles that we have never heard commercially before. The culture of doing mixtapes should start here right now. With the internet it is so easy to spread Malaysian Hip Hop…. I find new ways and sites almost everyday. Trust me, with a bit of patience and educated surfing Malaysian Hip Hop can find a space in the world.
